Description:

In May 2016 the Council of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) announced the Society’s strategic decision to hold our global congress annually, formally starting in 2020.

Due to the increasingly rapid advances in science as well as laboratory technology and treatment approaches, and the greater need for global collaboration, knowledge exchange and education, holding our congress annually will allow researchers, clinicians and allied health professionals in the bleeding, clotting and related fields to remain on the cutting-edge of science and deliver the best patient care.

The new annual ISTH congresses will fully incorporate highly valued ISTH Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) components, recognizing the value of the SSC’s work and its highly important applications, making them more accessible to the wider community.

In addition, the ISTH implemented a formal rotation pattern for its annual congresses, creating more frequent and consistent opportunities for engagement of the global community. The ISTH plans to host 38 percent of its congresses in Europe, 38 percent in North America and 24 percent in other regions of the world, which reflects the changing membership distribution and helps ISTH more proactively fulfill its global mandate. Innovation and outreach are key, and the Society is committed to reaching all of its audiences in various delivery modes.

Beginning with the 2024 ISTH Congress, the Society modified the Congress Chair and Congress destination selection process
.

To ensure that we are meeting the needs of our attendees and stakeholders, evolution and innovation of our Congress is essential.

To better align with our Strategic Plan and Educational Strategy Roadmap, the Society has moved from an ISTH member bid process for the ISTH Congress destination to a centralized Society application process and election of an Annual Congress Planning Committee Chair, which is separate from the Congress destination process.  This means that the development of the clinical, translational, and basic science components of the Congress will be conducted by the Society’s Annual Congress Planning Committee (ACPC), led by the Chair.

While the processes will be independent of each other, maintaining the international uniqueness of the ISTH is critical. Any active ISTH member is eligible to submit an application and election as the ACPC Chair, but preference will be given to those from the region where the congress is being held.  Regardless of location, all candidates will need to meet the requirements detailed in the official Annual Congress Planning Committee Chair (ACPC) Call for Applications.  Therefore, we will not accept Chair Applications submitted as a bid that includes a destination or venue.

Although it will no longer be the responsibility of a Local Organizing Committee to develop the clinical, translation, and basic science components of the Congress, whenever possible, we will engage with a Local Host Committee to ensure that the local international flavor of the destination is incorporated into the Congress.

This decision highlights our commitment to transformative scientific discoveries and clinical practices, exchanging information to drive innovation and progress in the field. It will allow the Society to serve all regions of the world, providing better and more frequent access to researchers, clinicians and allied health professionals in the field, regardless of where they live.

The 2027 Congress will once again return to North America (Canada, Mexico or the United States) and the final destination selection will occur over the next 2-3 months.

With these changes in place, we are pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for the 2027 Annual Congress Planning Committee Chair positions. The deadline to submit is March 14, 2025, with selection and appointment by ISTH Council no later than April 30, 2025.
