SSC Subcommittee on Biorheology, Biomaterials, and Bioengineering

This Subcommittee is focused on all blood flow-, blood-material compatibility-, and general bioengineering-related issues in thrombosis and haemostasis, spanning basic research models to methodology to put into practice in the clinic or medical device companies. We recognize the importance of shear stress and mechanical forces on hematopoietic cell and endothelial function, transport phenomena in coagulation, anticoagulation and fibrinolysis and how these phenomena combine with biochemical mechanisms and biomaterial interactions in nonlinear and complex ways to affect clotting, platelet activation, and vascular biology. The expertise of hematologists, biomedical researchers, material scientists, physical scientists and engineers is utilized.

Mandate

  • To review the state-of-the-art in flow-related issues for clinical and research practitioners
  • To evaluate existing blood flow assays and make recommendations for improvement
  • To establish standardized research protocols and clinical flow-based assays of haemostasis
  • To evaluate existing clinical and research-based hemocompatibility assays and make recommendations for improvement
  • To establish standards related to haemocompatibility related to biomaterials including materials used in devices and materials that flow with blood
  • To standardized in silico methods to simulate blood in relation to thrombosis and haemostasis · To establish methods related to the study of microphysiological systems
  • To identify and foster emerging areas of research related to bioengineering
  • To communicate the findings of the subcommittee in a clear and timely manner through journal
